CenturyLink’s appeal lies primarily in its speeds, which are much faster than most other DSL internet companies, and should be enough to satisfy heavy internet users.

centurylink

PROS: CenturyLink provides a variety of connection speeds and at much higher speeds than standard DSL.  It also includes Norton internet security.

CONS:  If you’re looking for an inexpensive option, CenturyLink does not provide cable internet, only DSL and fiber.

Strengths

Download Speeds up to 40 Mbps!

As far as DSL internet goes, CenturyLink is very fast, with plans offering up to 40 Mbps.  Many tests showed an average of 20 Mbps,  If you are a heavy internet user who enjoys games and streaming movies you should consider one of CenturyLink’s upper-end subscriptions or one of the higher-ranked internet service providers if available. But, it’s also been found that in 42 markets, users could experience break-neck speeds up to 1 Gbps.

This should allow you to surf the web, watch videos, and play games online without having to endure long load times.  For the rates this is awesome speed, but for households with several computers it may be problematic.

Five-Year Price Lock

CenturyLink has a five-year price lock offer available, which ensures that the monthly price you pay for your DSL internet service does not go up for five whole years. This offer is pretty much unmatched among DSL providers — and among internet providers in general — and could be extremely valuable if you are looking to keep your costs low.

Bundle with TV and Phone

CenturyLink offers several bundling options, including the ability to create your own bundle with just the features that you want. You can choose from any of its DSL internet plans, and add in home phone service, Verizon Wireless service, and even DIRECTV. Bundling these services together can be a great way to save a little money and is ideal for households looking to eventually purchase TV or phone services as well.

Weaknesses

Upload Speeds Are Relatively Slow

Although CenturyLink offers some pretty phenomenal download rates, its upload speeds are surprisingly lackluster. Every plan, with the exception of the 40 Mbps plan, offers only 896 Kbps. So if you plan on uploading photos or videos to the web, you should be prepared to wait — because it could take a while. However, the company’s 40 Mbps plan does offer a 5 Mbps upload speed, which is actually quite good for DSL internet, and should you choose this plan, you won’t have to worry about your uploads taking a long time.

Activation Fee

Before you are able to get DSL internet service from CenturyLink, you must pay the activation fee, which, though not very expensive, is still more money coming out of your pocket. DSL internet companies by and large do not charge activation fees, so the fact that CenturyLink does is a little surprising. But this shouldn’t be a major problem for most people, especially since you get so much from your CenturyLink internet plan.
